ROTWILD x PORSCHE – Over 15 Years of Development Collaboration
In addition to its own ROTWILD brand, ADP Engineering GmbH has been a sought-after development partner for innovative projects in the bicycle industry since its founding in 1994. Renowned automotive manufacturers such as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz are among ADP’s development partners. “When Porsche approached ADP with a project proposal, we were already producing a bicycle line for Mercedes-Benz,” recalls Peter Schlitt. “Naturally, before committing, I first checked with the Mercedes team to see whether working with Porsche simultaneously would be a problem. But Mercedes actually welcomed the fact that another automotive brand was entering the bike segment. And since the intended positioning of the Porsche bikes was completely different, we were able to launch the new project without issue.”
After around 18 months of development, Porsche presented its first two bikes made by ROTWILD in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as part of its Porsche Design Driver’s Selection: the Porsche Bike S and Porsche Bike RS.
One thing was clear from the start: a bike would only be right for Porsche if it was a technical product with a strong focus on function and design. On top of that, it had to deliver outstanding performance, be it in lightweight construction or exceptional riding characteristics.
The initial concept was clearly defined: Porsche bikes were to be a blend of road bike and mountain bike. As a lifestyle product, they combined ride comfort with a sporty experience delivering that unmistakable Porsche performance right from the first pedal stroke. “The goal was to create bikes that didn’t fit into any typical category,” explains Schlitt. “We aimed for a clear positioning by combining innovative design with premium components.” The aluminum Porsche Bike S, featuring an innovative belt drive, was conceived as an urban bike, ideal for city riding and light touring.
The Porsche Bike RS, with its carbon frame, targeted serious athletes and performance-focused riders. Lightweight and high-end, it was designed for those who demand top-tier materials, power, and aesthetics. The "RS" designation, a long-standing Porsche acronym for "Rennsport" (motorsport), emphasized its athletic aspirations.
The development process was tightly coordinated between ADP’s own engineering team and Porsche Design in Zell am See, Austria. The bikes were implemented and produced by ADP.
A defining design feature across all models was the so-called “Fly Line” the iconic roofline of the Porsche 911, which was translated into the bikes' top tube. While this design language could be easily realized in carbon frames thanks to greater design freedom and manual craftsmanship, the aluminum version pushed frame builders to their limits. Its realization was only made possible by the then relatively new and complex hydroforming process, in which the material is shaped using a high-pressure water-oil emulsion.
As a result, Porsche decided to expand its presence in the e-bike segment and once again relied on the expertise and experience of the ROTWILD team. The Porsche eBike Sport and Porsche eBike Cross were developed in close cooperation and have been manufactured at the company headquarters in Dieburg, Hessen, since their launch in 2019. This time, inspiration came from the sporty character of the Porsche Taycan e-sports car, which also influenced the design. The organically shaped carbon frame of the bikes echoes the Taycan’s roofline.
This exceptional collaboration combines the design expertise of Studio F. A. Porsche with the technical know-how of ROTWILD’s team. These full-suspension e-bikes stand out thanks to their unique carbon frames, powerful Shimano motors, and high-end components, not to mention integrated lighting in the Sport model.
Since then, the product line has continued to evolve. In May 2023, Porsche and ROTWILD introduced the Porsche eBike Cross Performance and eBike Cross Performance EXC, both equipped with the absolute top-tier components available in the cycling industry.
What has made this collaboration such a true win-win over so many years? Peter Schlitt reflects: “In our long-standing partnership, we didn’t just bring great bikes to market and develop new, innovative solutions together. As ADP, we also learned a great deal from Porsche, especially when it comes to process and quality management. Building international service structures, running production here in Dieburg that meets Porsche’s standards, developing multiple model variants, and being the system supplier for this exceptional customer over so many years—that’s a huge amount of work. But above all, it’s an incredible source of motivation.”
