Rennbericht European E-MTB Tour #1 Nova Gorica
The pits were then set up on Tuesday, which went very quickly and professionally. A spacious asphalt parking lot in the center of the village offered all teams an excellent starting position. In general, the Swiss organizers deserve praise. The entire layout of the event was very compact. Everything was within easy walking distance, which we were particularly pleased about as the World Championships will be held there in 2025. Finally, on Tuesday, we explored one stage on a track walk. The conclusion was: fast, rocky and choppy. On Wednesday, an old acquaintance returned: the popular "Shakedown" was brought back to life in the Bellwald Bike Park. As part of the "Shakedown", all riders, photographers and filmers meet up on one or two designated routes to produce content for the following week. With big jumps, steep berms and challenging root fields, the bike park provided the perfect backdrop for this. All the riders clearly had fun and enjoyed their time on the bike. The highlight was definitely our mechanic Lorenz. With a good dose of style, he stole the show from some of the pros. Cheered on by Kelan, he even managed to "brake" the tire off the rim. Lorenz, you rock!
Everyone was visibly tense before the Practice Day on Thursday. It was clear that the longest and toughest race of the season was imminent. All stages started above 2000 meters, the race time would be over 50 minutes and the total distance over 9 stages was about 80 kilometers. A long day in the saddle! Another novelty in this race: All stages were allowed to be practiced in the correct order. This spared us the classic pondering the evening before as to which order would be best. Everything went smoothly during training. Kelan and Helen quickly got to grips with the alpine terrain and found their flow more and more towards the afternoon on the sometimes very tricky routes. After a two-day break, it was finally time for the race on Sunday! With perfect weather and course conditions, the anticipation was very high! Kelan and Helen both started the race shortly after 9 am. However, the order of the loops was changed so as not to clash with the EDR race. Due to a thunderstorm, both races were held on the same day, unfortunately at the expense of the e-bike racers, who therefore didn't have a proper finish. What a pity!
The first two stages went very well for Kelan and Helen. Both were able to position themselves within striking distance of the top riders. Stage three was the first power stage. Kelan managed a very good seventh place here, but the gap to first place was only just under two seconds! Stages 4 and 5 went very well for Helen! She was able to secure 3rd place before the lunch break. Kelan was in the top 10 overall after the first loop. Motivated by the good results of the first loop, both started the second part of the race very well. Stage 6 was the 7-kilometer Glaciara trail. This was peppered with rocks and long climbs. Helen was able to maintain her third place overall with a good result. Kelan improved to 8th place overall. Stages 7 and 8 were then a power stage and an e-bike-specific stage. Unfortunately, both lost time here. Unfortunately, Helen had a technical defect on stage 8, which meant she was unable to finish the race. After a long day in the saddle, Kelan finished 14th in the final standings. The brief disillusionment after the very positive morning was followed by a very positive mood for the summer break. The team was once again able to show its potential. Now it's up to us to put the pieces of the puzzle together. See you in Loudenvielle!
