"Close to perfection" - the R.X735 ULTRA in the ElektroRad test
In issue 02-2024, the specialist magazine ElektroRad extensively tested 86 eBikes from the categories of Tour/Trekking, City, and Sport. In the category of sporty full-suspension eMTBs, the ROTWILD R.X735 in the ULTRA equipment variant had the opportunity to compete with two other representatives. The editorial team attributes "a unique style" to all three bikes, making them easily comparable despite their distinct differences. The unifying criterion, according to the testers led by editor-in-chief Stephan Kümmel, is that they belong to the premium class (starting from 5,000 euros) based on their price. This is because all representatives place a strong emphasis on safety, durability, and reliable suspension systems. This comes with a cost even in entry-level models, but it guarantees tremendous fun on the trails. The significant differences then emerge in the equipment. "Finest technology" characterizes our bike. It "absolutely delivers on its promises," emphasizes the editorial team. We can confidently agree with the statement that it is not "a bike for everyone." It is a bike for individuals who value high quality through German engineering, value retention, and athletic performance, and who want to push their limits. Of course, this can include "everyone" as well.
An ultra-lightweight concept
A key distinguishing feature among the three test candidates is the material of the frame. While one representative uses aluminum, we build the frame of the R.X735 from high-quality carbon, making our bike lightweight. The editors weigh it in the tested ULTRA equipment variant at 21.3 kg. "Mountain bikers passionately discussed this topic even before the huge e-bike wave," the editorial team defines "weight" as essential. A discussion that continues for the testers even in the era of motorization. 90 percent of all mountain bikes sold now have an e-drive. However, lightweight construction in eMTBs was not a pressing issue for a long time due to the comfort provided by powerful motors and large batteries. That is changing now. The editorial team calls it "a return to 'old days'". Many riders, drawing from experiences in the mountain bike era, also want to have a natural handling experience with eMTBs. This explains the trend towards smaller motors and batteries with lower capacity, which save weight overall. However, this inevitably requires more effort from the riders. The editorial team acknowledges that with the concept of the R.X735, we aim to counter this perceived contradiction by focusing on consistent lightweight construction. "Even the battery housing is made of carbon and provides [...] better impact protection," describe the testers our material choice.
Thoughtfully designed and engineered
The editors describe our R.X735 as "dizzying." While this may not sound flattering at first, especially in terms of the handling of an eMTB on the trail, the testers immediately qualify it. They attribute the adjective to the price of the R.X735 in the ULTRA equipment variant. They explain that the view of the high-quality component list justifies the purchase cost. Additionally, the review praises the "engineering achievement of the beautifully designed frame, meticulously thought out to the smallest detail." They also include our in-house developed battery in the principle of high value. Regarding the bike's handling on the trail, it's clear to the testers: one doesn't really lose balance. Instead, the riding experience is simply impressive for them. During the ride, the "ultra-precise suspension," the "well-chosen tires," and the geometry provide an exceptional riding experience.
Powerful motor from Shimano
Also in terms of high-quality equipment and functionality, the R.X735 scored well. Testers particularly appreciate the easy unlocking and removal of the battery from the downtube, the ROTWILD Quick Release System. They also praise the installation of the retractable NGS2.0 seatpost from Eightpins, the use of Shimano's 4-piston XTR brakes, and their XT Di2 electronic shifting. The powerful EP801 motor from Shimano stands out as well, which can be very individually adjusted via the E-Tube app. Because the R.X735 "craves speed uphill and downhill [...]", this is quite possible on the trails because the control, frame stiffness, suspension, and geometry allow for very precise control.
An almost perfect conclusion
As an assessment remains: The character of the R.X735 ULTRA is defined by its high level of sportiness. This applies to its area of application as well as to its seating position. The handling tends to be more agile than stable. In individual ratings, the R.X735 achieves top scores in the areas of equipment, comfort, and usability. When it comes to aspects such as the drive system, handling, safety, and maintenance effort, the bike doesn't fall far behind. What the editorial team writes is very expressive for us: "If the Rotwild R.X735 Ultra doesn't bring a smile to your face, you should never ride an E-MTB again. A bike close to perfection." In classic grading terms, the R.X735 ULTRA receives a score of 1.2.
