Brilliant riding characteristics, record-breakingly light. The ROTWILD R.X275 ULTRA in the test

Outstanding Performance, Record-Breakingly Light: The ROTWILD R.X275 ULTRA reviewed

The ROTWILD R.X275 ULTRA is one of the lightest e-mountain bikes, setting new standards in the Light E-MTB category. In a comparison test by the magazine Elektrorad (Issue 05-2024), the ROTWILD stands out as the lightest in its class. The test team recorded a weight of just 15.5 kilograms for the frame size large.

Around 580 carbon cutouts are hand-crafted into an ultra-light yet extremely durable raw frame, weighing just 1,893 grams. This forms the basis for the bike’s lightweight design.

Design and Frame

The heart of the R.X275 is its "meticulously crafted and elegantly designed carbon frame" made from high-modulus fibers. The frame not only impressed the test editors with its look but, in their opinion, also plays a significant role in reducing the bike's allover weight. In addition the frame is key to the bike's exceptional climbing abilities and high agility. Thanks to the flexible carbon seat stays, the bike doesn’t need additional rear suspension pivots. "With its modern geometry, featuring a longer reach and a slack head angle," the bike provides "a great sense of security and control both uphill and downhill."

Thanks to the flexible carbon seat stays, the R.X275 eliminates the need for additional rear suspension pivots while still achieving 120 mm of travel.

Drive System and Battery

This lightweight design is made possible by the TQ HPR 50 light drive, which weighs only 1.85 kilograms, along with an ultra-light 252 Wh battery that weighs just 1.4 kilograms. For longer rides or extended range, ROTWILD offers an optional Range Extender with an additional 160 Wh, which can easily be attached to one of the two Fidlock bottle holders.

The HPR50 motor from TQ is "Made in Germany," weighs only 1,850 g, and is very compact. This allows for seamless integration into the bottom bracket area.

Performance and Ride Experience

The riding position on the R.X275 is described by Elektrorad magazine as "sporty and long," which "puts a lot of pressure on the front wheel," making "ambitious climbing" a breeze with the R.X275. The motor's support in the lowest setting is considered very subtle, encouraging sporty riders to put in more effort themselves – a real plus for those who want to train their fitness even on steep climbs. In the two higher support levels, the bike handles even steep inclines with ease.

The red Boost Button delivers up to 300 watts of extra power for up to 30 seconds – perfect for steep climbs, sprinting out of corners, or overcoming obstacles on the trail.

The testers were also impressed with the downhill performance, where the R.X275 shows its strengths: "On downhills, the R.X275 feels stable with its slack 66° head angle and powerful air suspension." This ensures a secure ride, even in challenging terrain. However, the low, sporty cockpit design does require some experience, especially on steep descents.

Outstanding performance and record-breaking lightness: the R.X275 is the ultimate trail bike with eAssist. The short travel kinematics with 130 mm of front travel and 120 mm in the rear provide agile handling and excellent grip on any surface.

Conclusion

The ROTWILD R.X275 ULTRA earned an overall rating of "Very Good" (1.5) in the review, impressing across the board. Conclusion: "The lively R.X275 excels both uphill and downhill, delighting well-trained marathon/XC riders. They appreciate the lower motor power and use the 29er as a top training buddy."

If you're looking for a record-breakingly light, sporty e-mountain bike that combines top performance with a natural riding feel, the R.X275 ULTRA will not disappoint.
