All-Mountain with a pronounced playful side. The R.X735 PRO in review
The R.X735 PRO is the versatile all-rounder in a world of specialists, offering an impressively wide range of uses. Instead of settling for compromises, this all-mountain delivers a complete package: lightweight despite its powerful battery, a high-quality handcrafted carbon frame, plenty of suspension travel, and a modern, well-balanced geometry.
The R.X735 is a climbing-friendly bike that also performs well on long ascents. On the trail it feels agile and easy to handle, and when things get really steep downhill, it impresses with plenty of control in demanding sections. As a 29er, it’s an all-mountain bike in the best sense, and it thrills in a wide range of conditions.
Still in a class of its own
In a recent test by the online magazine Velomotion, the R.X735 impressively demonstrated that “a well-thought-out concept” can still win people over. What stood out most was its versatility. In their conclusion, the testers noted: “The combination of a lightweight, stiff carbon frame, the powerful Shimano drive, and the excellent, removable battery is still in a class of its own. The handling is sporty, agile, and yet secure, making the bike an extremely versatile companion for almost any terrain.”
What particularly stood out to the editors was the IPU (Integrated Power Unit) developed by ROTWILD – the unique combination of motor and battery. Regarding the proven Shimano EP801 motor with up to 85 Nm of torque, Velomotion stated: “The motor delivers powerful and well-balanced support that is sufficient even for the steepest climbs.”
Since the weight of the battery has a major influence on the overall weight of an e-MTB, the ROTWILD engineers developed a special carbon battery housing. This saves a significant amount of weight and plays a key role in keeping the test bike under 22 kg.
But it’s not just the low weight that impresses, the IPU’s removal mechanism is also unique. The test confirms: “Power is supplied by a battery developed by ROTWILD, integrated into a carbon housing with a capacity of 720 Wh. What makes it special is the removal mechanism: at the push of a button, the roughly 3.5 kg battery can be quickly removed from the side of the down tube. This solution is one of the best on the market and extremely user-friendly.” [Note: The Velomotion editors did point out the absence of a battery lock, but as an upgrade option, the push button can be replaced with a lockable version.]
Sporty, powerful all-mountain – the riding impression
Already in the first few meters on the trail, the R.X735 shows that it can do more than just touring – it embodies the qualities of a true all-mountain bike in the best possible way. The editors describe it like this: “On the trail, the R.X735 surprises with a much sportier character than its specs might suggest. It is not a pure touring bike, but a powerful all-mountain with a pronounced playful side.”
How does the R.X735 perform uphill?
In developing the suspension and designing the overall geometry, our engineers placed great emphasis on outstanding climbing characteristics. You can feel this in every ascent, and the test crew confirms it emphatically: “On climbs, the bike benefits from its well-balanced geometry. The relatively steep seat angle positions the rider centrally over the bottom bracket, which puts plenty of pressure on the front wheel. Even on very steep ramps, the front wheel stays grounded and traction is excellent. The climbing behavior is efficient and confident.”
The essence of mountain biking: trail and descent
When the trail points downhill, the R.X735 shows what it’s really made of. The confident climbing machine transforms into an agile and lively descender that is not only easy to control but also delivers plenty of riding fun. The editors were particularly impressed by its lively handling and the direct feedback of the suspension: “When going downhill, the R.X735 unfolds its full potential. It rides agile and lively, can be playfully carved through corners, and invites you to pop off edges. The comparatively low weight contributes significantly to this light-footed handling. The suspension provides excellent feedback from the ground and responds directly to the rider’s input.”
The bike rewards the rider with a surprisingly high level of stability and control, without ever losing its lively character. The testers conclude: “Despite its playfulness, the bike conveys a great sense of security when things get faster and rougher. It may not be a pure ‘park-shredding machine,’ but it performs remarkably well even in demanding enduro terrain.”
A key factor in this performance is the progressive rear suspension. It not only provides traction on undulating trails but also offers the necessary reserves for harder landings and fast impacts. The result: fewer unwanted bottom-outs and more control when the terrain gets faster and rougher. The experts emphasize: “The progressive rear suspension offers plenty of reserves and effectively prevents bottom-outs.”
Conclusion: THIS is a modern all-mountain, the overall package is right
The combination of modern geometry, responsive suspension, and low weight creates an optimal overall package that perfectly captures the spirit of a modern all-mountain bike – versatile, agile, and always ready for the next challenge.
The test conclusion states: “All in all, the balance between geometry, suspension, and weight is very well executed and perfectly reflects the character of a modern all-mountain bike.”
