Nadine's home circuit: "Guardian of the Allgäu"
This is my home circuit, right on my doorstep, and I regularly ride here after work or if I need a quick blast and haven’t enough time for a longer training session. The ride passes over the south side of the Grünten, which is 1,738 metres high and is also known as the “Guardian of the Allgäu”.
You start from Sontfhofen/Winkel. It’s about 30 minutes uphill from here, first on tarmac and then on gravel. Towards the end, the climb gets somewhat tougher and passes through a wood filled with roots. From here, you then roll downhill on zigzag gravel tracks towards Walten. On the way there, you pass a fork towards the chapel in Unterried. This is a good spot for a quick break – there’s a nice bench and with a magnificent view over the Allgäu.
Afterward, the route ascends again for a while towards Bildstöckle. When you arrive at the turning platform at the top, you can either turn off onto the trail or descend via the tarmac road. Riders opting for the trail should watch out for hikers! At the junction on the tarmac road, decide whether you want to head straight back to Sonthofen/Winkel or add on in an extra small loop via Tiefenbach before the route then levels off back to the starting point.
